Champagne Popcorn
When we think of a festive snack, popcorn is always at the top of the list. But how about Champagne Popcorn? Yes, it can be done and yes it tastes great. Also, yes, you can use sparkling wine or prosecco.
This recipe is great for any celebration - birthdays, holidays, getting through another week. There's really no wrong time to make this. But, how do we make it actually taste like champagne? No weird extracts here, we used actual champagne but concentrated the flavor.
You can't just pour champagne over a bowl of popcorn because it would get soggy but you can create a syrup with it and bake it on. We reduced champagne on the stovetop until it turned into a syrup. Then we added some sugar, a bit of water and stirred until the sugar dissolved.
Stir in the popped corn - we love our large mushroom kernels for this - spread out on a baking sheet and bake for a few minutes to set the coating. You'll be left with crunchy popcorn that has a slightly sweet and distinctly champagne flavor. And since everyone knows champagne goes great with strawberries, we sprinkled on some freeze dried strawberry powder. It added a subtle berry flavor, a little tartness, another touch of sweetness and, of course, a pretty pink color. So festive and so tasty!
It also makes a great gift. Place it in a baggie tied with a pretty ribbon and maybe include a bag of our Dell Cove Spices mushroom popcorn kernels and a couple of our seasonings. The perfect blend of ready made plus homemade gift for any occasion.
Sweet, tart, and a little unexpected, this champagne popcorn will quickly become one of your favorite snacks.
Serving Ideas
- The recipe is perfect for parties, set out alongside glasses of champagne and other cocktails.
- Instead of placing the champagne popcorn in bowls, try filling champagne coupe-style glasses (even plastic party ones) and setting it out among bottles of champagne.
- Make extra and pre-fill bags with the champagne popcorn. Tie with a festive ribbon for people to take home as goody bags.
